The Covid cruise ship people were brought to Lackland AFB in San Antonio. The city had a 10 page response plan already, more in depth than any place in the US and Gov Abbott ruled that the city did not have the right to implement it while he hid out in his bunker in Austin. Our city saw SO many fatalities, and we lost close friends and family. This regime is NOT the regime to be trusted with these crises.

I would simply say, " This administration is not to be trusted!" Full stop!

To add insult to injury, our entire healthcare system was shown to be too fractured to be efficient in such a crisis as was Covid. It was Andrew Cuomo who educated us daily, not only about the virus, but highlighting the dynamics of blue state vs red state economics. We are in deep doodoo if something even 10% as pernicious as Covid happens before 2029. Thanks for your important work Miles!

Imagining that idiot RFK Jr in charge of a completely ransacked CDC during something important and potentially deadly is the stuff of nightmares

I remember how Trump weaponized the Federal Covid response in his first term. At the very beginning things happened very quickly while states scrambled for PPE for their hospitals, medical teams and general populations. Trump went in buying up scarce supplies and prevented NY and others from being able to obtain them.

I’d expect more of the same but on a grander scale.

That's a scary thought Miles, thank God I'm Canadian. My heart breaks for the US people.

Thank you & I worry for your country. Fires & pandemics don't stop at artificial boundaries set up by governments. Just think of the beautiful cities in Canada that sit directly across from a city in the US. Prevailing winds & pathogens won't get to security check points & stop & return to the US. I hate to be so negative but we indeed are a global community & unfortunately for both your country & mine we face huge problems that your government will fight while many in our government will jealously & zealously support the idiots in charge! Face it, right now you have a lousy, hate-filled "neighbor" run by a group of self-centered morons that only know how to do one thing, suck up to trump & his cult followers.

I wish us both luck.

We are trying, we are trying, whether we can defend ourselves depends largely on our midterm elections this year & our presidential elections in 2028 through 20 something. It certainly won't be reversed in one 4 year term of a normal US presidency.!

Living here in California I've seen trump & his sleezy enablers. We've got a goddam Oath Keeper running for governor on the Republican ticket. What could possibly go wrong if he won????

And like I mentioned in my response to our neighbor from Canada, fires & pandemics & floods don't stop at the borders between red & blue states. The addle-brained idiots in this regime don't know any more about US geography than they do about Middle East geography & the Strait of Hormuz! Evidently they don't know that our forests stretch well beyond state boundaries. So not providing fire prevention in blue states directly affect the forests in red states.

Selfishness & self-centeredness prevail in this regime at an astounding scale. And as Miles so adroitly pointed out it's not just the leaders, they've installed similar sycophants & idiots throughout the system. And just think about the hellaballoo that will erupt when Democrats go through & sweep those idiots out. Republicans/Maga wil come unglued at the "injustice" of depleting our bureaucracy!!!!

As many others have stated we have a lot to do now & for years to come. One thing in which we can take selfish solace is that if the pandemic comes it will kill more Maga idiots than normal people. Oh, absolutely we'll lose hundreds of thousands, probably millions but I still think the odds would be in the "normal" people being able to better defend ourselves in blue states where our state governments have already banded together for mutual aid.

I'm 78 so I won't experience all that will happen down the line but my daughter & her family will. My granddaughter is majoring in biological studies in college, who knows, maybe she will get a job where she can help? Though I think I probably should have ended that sentence with 'MAYBE, she will get a job'! Who knows what jobs, if any will remain!

Ah, yes, America Made Great Again???????

More bad news! I recently read that what DJT and his minions have put in place doesn't rest with him; it's a system, a method for moving forward. In order for any of this to change, a new administration must address they system rot that's been put in place. Otherwise, changing out the head won't make a difference.

Thank you Miles. This is so damn frightening

So incredibly chilling to read this, knowing we all have a total psychopath as the most powerful and revenge filled human in control of this country.

Trump is on the fast track to kill people to be replace with robots, that don’t protest, don’t need federal money, always do what are told, has been programmed to do that!

Yes, I've felt the same way. What better & "easier" way to delete the population than by mass deportations, pandemics, forced poverty & starvation. Then they can have the 'right people only' vote. But wait, the right people are suseptible to all those things. Well, now, what is an autocrat to do????

joannegucci's avatar

What the hell! This is total insanity, daily, and then, they’re back again the next day. It’s been said “that everything happens for a reason, even if we don’t know, with faith, “why” the reason eventually will come out” I just think things are fucked beyond repair, and its a spiral to god knows where. It seems, like today is really bad, BUT THEN THE NEXT DAY IS FUCKING WORSE! “Return to Normalcy” hate to be doomsayer, but there’s not even a flicker of normalcy in our future, just a teeny glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel would work, but keep lookin to avail!

Yeah, I struggle with this bat shit crazy stuff, too. I have been looking for a countdown timer and I was not disappointed this morning. howmuchmoretrumpleft.com/

With 984 days remaining, he’s just getting started and that is frightening considering all the damage he has done already.

Joanne - It is really crazy. Every night you go to bed thinking Felon47 and his minions can't possibly sink any lower or do anything more insane or inhumane. You get up the next morning a discover the Manure Pile posted some insane bull-hockey in the middle of the night that makes yesterday's crazy appear almost sane. You briefly wonder how many of his brain cells are definitely not synapsing as you read that garbage. Then soon after the news reports the vile, hateful, ugly ignorant words of Kegsbreath or Miller or Patel or Vought or maybe even Vance. No matter how often we think they can't possibly sink any lower - BINGO - THEY DO IT.

Vermont has already experienced the ire of the president. Recent flood damage grant applications to repair damage caused by climate change that he is making worse, have been delayed or outright denied. My concern is how can a small state like Vermont dredge up the resources to prepare for the next crisis? Much federal funding has already been cut, causing budget cuts across the board.

Perhaps Mamdani will provide daily updates for the next pandemic if it happens during or soon after trump. It takes time to restore what trump broke so thoroughly. How are we going to rid our federal and states sycophants so we can get something done from the get-go?

john@johnmdowd.com's avatar

Remember the kids lost in the Texas hill Country /Guadalupe River flood represented by noisy right Trump congressional sychophant. FEMA not prepared and no relief requested.

I heard hints of people buying up Ivermectin, which is a drug for parasitic worms in animals. Why in the world would people buy this you ask? It's cheap and you can buy it online or in various places like Rural King. But it won't do anything for Hantavirus because Hantavirus IS a virus and needs a vaccine NOT a wormer for horses, sheep and cows.

Robot Bender's avatar

I don't think Trump understands or cares that diseases don't stop at borders. Any pandemic will be just as deadly to Red states as Blue ones. Not only that, the regime will be just as vulnerable to it as anyone else. I guess they haven't read Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death."

P J Johnston's avatar

I'm sure that has something to do with it. Maybe they will all follow his cures and see that they don't work either.

Felon47 and his puerile demented, deranged mental state are to be feared. His attitude of every transaction requiring leverage so he can get his way is akin to a 3 year old throwing a tantrum to get the toy he wants to play with. NOTHING in this administration, including personnel appointments, appears to be based on knowledge, useful experience, competence, facts, truth or reality. It is quite terrifying to realize we have a Federal government comprised mainly of incompetent nincompoops and ignorant twits with virtually all ethics and competency and other oversight now non-existent. The GOP have eliminated or seriously crippled any government agency that might try to bring them back into the real world.

The picture in my head should we get hit with another highly infectious disease isn’t pleasant. Under our present regime the rest of the world would have no choice but to cut us totally off; ground our planes, intern any tourists on their shores and slam shut their borders and then watch as we start counting bodies.
