You agree to the privacy policy below, and the Privacy Policy for Substack, the technology provider.
Note: This is the privacy policy of DEFIANCE.org. You're reading it on our Substack publication, which is operated under license by DEFIANCE.org. Substack maintains its own privacy policy governing platform-level data collection — you can review it at substack.com/privacy.

At DEFIANCE.org, we collect as little data as possible, only what’s necessary to run this operation, and we never sell your information — period.
Like you, we hate sharing our personal data. So we’re going to protect yours, and we’re only going to ask for what we need in order to communicate with you and make you a part of the DEFIANCE.org community.
This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
1. What We Collect
We collect:
Personal Info: When you sign up for emails, sign the Declaration, or become a Member, we might ask for your name, email, donation info, and optional zip code or affiliation.
Payment Details: Processed securely by our third-party payment processor. We do not store full credit card info; those entities will handle your data via their own policies in order to securely process your payments.
Activity Data: Basic analytics like pages visited or actions taken on our site (via tools like Google Analytics) to improve performance and usability.
This applies to data collected on both DEFIANCE.org and DEFIANCE.News. Our payment processors are: Stripe (via Squarespace), or if you signed up before Nov. 7, our partners at Democracy Engine.
2. How We Use Your Info
We use your information to:
Confirm your membership or declaration signature
Send you updates, briefings, and opportunities to act, including through platforms like Substack (which may collect data under its own privacy policies)
Improve the site and your experience
Fulfill legal or security obligations
We encourage you to review Substack’s privacy policy for more information, as that is the main platform we’ll use to communicate with you.
3. Who Sees Your Info
We do NOT sell or rent your data. Ever. Yuck. Who the hell would want that?!
We only share info with:
Partners or platforms directly helping us run DEFIANCE.org and support our causes (e.g. being able to send you updates)
Managing the site itself (e.g. payment or analytics)
Law enforcement if legally required (we hope not)
To be clear, it’s necessary to give contractors, subcontractors, or other service providers the secure accessed needed to Member data to help us run our operations, such as doing customer support. When we do, those partners are required to sign and comply with data protection and confidentiality obligations — they don’t get to do whatever they want with your data just because we looped them in!
4. Your Rights
You can:
Unsubscribe from emails at any time
Request your data or ask us to delete it by emailing support@defiance.org
Ask questions — we’re happy to clarify
5. Data Security
We take precautions to protect your info. However, no system is 100% bulletproof. If we ever experience a data breach, we’ll notify you promptly.
6. Children’s Privacy
This site is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
7. International Visitors
DEFIANCE.org is based in the United States and built for U.S. residents. If you’re visiting from outside the U.S., know that we process and store data here. Other countries may have different — sometimes weaker — data protections than your home jurisdiction. By using this site, you acknowledge that.
8. Social Platforms
If you use social sharing features on our site (like a Facebook or X share button), those platforms may collect data about that interaction under their own privacy policies. We don’t control what they do with it — check their policies directly.
9. Technical Data
Like most websites, we automatically log basic technical information — like IP addresses and browser type — for troubleshooting and to track which pages get the most traffic. We use this to fix problems and improve the site. We don’t use it to track individual users.
10. Email Analytics
We may use standard email analytic methods (like embedded images in emails) to measure open rates and see which updates resonate with our members. This helps us communicate better, not spy on you. You can disable this by turning off automatic image loading in your email client.
11. Changes
We may update this policy. If we do, we’ll update the date above and notify Members if the changes are significant.
