Hope, perseverance and fight. We must hold on to hope and persevere to protect and save the country we love. We must fight for America and its promise.

Thank you for this series, Miles. Happy July 4th to you and yours.

Wow! This is a stunning piece, Miles. It should be submitted to and printed by The Atlantic.

Your philosophic statement so poignant, so helpful, so true.

And, another I always observe, that in the face of adversity, we come together; we pool our resources and ignore differences to fight.

"Let's roll," indeed!

My insides clenched while I was reading this. My daughter called me from her dorm room at university 100 miles away(while working on a Political Science major) and told me to go fill up the car with gas and get cash from the bank NOW, and turn on the TV when I get back. She was terror stricken but focused and calm. It all came back. Beautifully and effectively conveyed, and received with my heart open and my resolve firmly fixed.

Thank you for all you continue to do for our nation, for humanity.

In the tradition of the Federalist papers, really, amazing work, Miles. Our government is only legitimate when consented to by the governed. When consent is removed, in this case, Congress must act to impeach and remove. Get out the vote in November 2026. Let's Roll!

Yes indeed, you were talking about many things here. My take on electing officials is pretty much like yours. First I will tell you I'm not a scholar of Poli Sci or Civics but took classes in both of them and I guess a lot of what I was taught stuck with me. Anyway, I said many times politicians are pretty much like hiring people for a job (as a matter of fact it is). Do we owning our world want to elect someone who doesn't want to do anything for us, or one that says he will do a few things to get our vote and then devotes his political career and future on the leader of our nation? I don't know about you but I would want a qualified human being with very little bias toward power and greed. Why? Because we now have this and nobody told those when the voted who they were hiring that he wasn't qualified. When congress votes on presidential appointments I want them, in turn think very hard before confirming them. Are the qualified will they do a good job? All this is common sense stuff, but some should vote more with their gut than their loyalty.

Miles,

Thank you for this powerful series. I was really feeling like not supporting this celebration of 250 years, but I've shifted my feelings around it. I do not love the America I see right now, what I do love is my ability to stand up to the forces that are trying to destroy this democracy. I'm 72 years young and only have missed one election in my 54 years of voting and that was a local election because I had moved. This is basically what we have left and I just pray we the people get out there and vote vote vote!!!

You are an inspiration to so many of us!

Again thanks you and all the best to you and your dear family!

I have no words. This is Profoundly important. I restocked and am sharing. It seems trivial that i committed to wearing my VOTE tee shirt until the ‘elections’. I will wear it. I will continue my fight for our Democracy.

I never sacrificed my solitude. (During the holocaust it was more precious than bread.) It has been stolen from me. But this kind of writing and love of freedom is exciting and invigorating. I have found this inspiration from Flight 93 passengers for some time, now, also. Miles, thank you.

Very powerful essay, Miles. You used the word “citizens”. So sad that we are virtually never called that. Instead, we are called “consumers” – so insulting. We need to get back to being citizens. Reading the Douglass quote, I was thinking “are we really any better than that era?’ – how about ICE and their targets? I have a feeling immigrants could say almost the same thing.

Miles, I appreciate your unvarnished and moving series regarding the pillars. It appears we are beginning to honor Todd's word, "Let's roll"

Thank you and I hope you are influential in the remodeling of our democracy.
