Let’s Send Prison Stocks Into a Downward Spiral
Last night, we held an important conversation with Worth Rises Executive Director Bianca Tylek. Here’s what we learned:
Two companies dominate the industry. GEO Group and CoreCivic operate 90% of the immigration detention system.
You may own them without knowing it. If you have a Vanguard retirement fund, you could be invested in both. Vanguard owns over 10% of each company.
You can push for a switch. Ask your employer to move to a different retirement fund provider. No other provider holds anywhere near what Vanguard does, so switching to almost any alternative is a meaningful act of divestment.
Enough departures force a decision. If Vanguard loses enough clients, it has reason to drop GEO Group and CoreCivic from its funds.
One exit can trigger a cascade. If Vanguard sells, the falling share price could prompt other funds to dump the stocks too—purely for performance reasons—setting off a mass sell-off.
This is a way to stop prison camp expansion. A lower stock price and higher cost of borrowing would cripple these companies’ ability to expand their operations.
