To depend on Johnson to do the "right thing" is madness. He is a spineless Trump sycophant and a religious fruitcake. States under threat should protect the ballots with the deployment of the National Guard.

Jennifer Raymond's avatar

I agree about Johnson, but once states deploy the National Guard it feels like we're headed toward another Civil War.

Stephen ONeill's avatar

If Trump successfully takes over the electoral process, we are much more likely to face a Civil War.

Unfortunately I think we’re already there. Deployed NG in MN to protect civilians from feds. Red states sending their NG to blue states … it’s just not been active fire… yet.

The trajectory they’re on… ICE/DHS or a trigger happy soldier WILL fire on crowd at some point and all hell will break loose.

I hate to say this but unless it’s stopped early, we are in deep doo doo.

joannegucci's avatar

Spot on, one wrong move, probably would be one of trump-miller fascists! They’ve been itching to have a bloody war on the streets, which would do in turn do their master miller-trump proud.

Marc Panaye's avatar

Dear Jennifer, you already have a civil war going on in your country.

joannegucci's avatar

Oh god help us ! But, i “feel” you’re right.😢

TCinLA's avatar

The Civil War already exists.

I truly don’t believe that Mike Johnson has the courage and patriotism that Mike Pence ultimately found. I want to agree with you on this Miles, but I have to reserve judgment. But I admire your commitment and hope.

Mike Johnson is all about incorrectly interpreting the Bible to fit his needs.

You have got to be kidding? Yet, I know you are not. MAGA Mike Johnson has shown himself as an abdicator of responsibility in his role as Speaker. When times get tough, Johnson leaves town and closes the House. The resistance needs to be clear-eyed about all possibilities.

If our democracy comes down to Mike Johnson we are screwed. We have to be prepared for this scenario and have the American public ready to prevent it from happening. We will need to guard the vote, assemble to prevent theft and make sure Americans are aware of this potential theft so communities can act. They are failing in Minneapolis due to citizen resistance and we need to make them fail at a potential election theft. We have no choice.

Will Johnson do the right thing?

No. I see no other answer, based on his actions since he took over the speakership.

We do need margins that indicate they are too big to rig. Will those who don't bother voting wake up in time?

IMO, the America as we know it is just a breath away from life support.

TCinLA's avatar

The "America as we know it" is ALREADY on Life Support. Having this happen next November would be pulling the plug.

Wouldn't it be possible to gain the majority in at least the House before the midterm elections?? I think more must be done to bring this to the attention of the public so at least the nefarious actors wouldn't control both prior to the midterms!

Let’s go with forewarned is forearmed. It’s not like the bells, whistles and fire alarms haven’t been sounding for several years now but I’m seriously hoping and doing what I can to see that I can vote and hope others are doing the same. I would like to think that what we’ve seen go down over this past year will have awakened a sleeping giant so that voters turn out in numbers too great to ignore or rig. Id like to think that Bad Bunny’s marvelous halftime show opened a few more eyes to our potential for good but it won’t be handed to us. For that to happen, like our fathers and mothers before us, we will have to fight for it.

Johnson gave his balls to Trump long ago so counting on him to do the right thing is ludicrous.

I saw a glimmer of possibility in a video by my CA Senator Schiff today. Trump made a very disrespectful speech at the National Prayer meeting. Nothing even remotely spiritually uplifting in Trumps remarks: It was all about his doing the despicable to gratify his ego (Vanity being one of the 7 sins). Trumo made a snide remark about how pious Johnson is at another luncheon event telling this story: At one time, Johnson wanted to say grace...In response, Trump said to Johnson, "Mike this is lunch!" as a rebuke to saying grace! My point is that Trump is now openly making fun of Johnson's religious beliefs. If Johnson is looking for God's forgiveness, maybe he is open to joining the resistance against 😈 Trump to save our democracy. God vs Trump, Mikey. Your choice. God is testing your soul to see if you will help us save the soul of our country.

In 2020, MAGA Mike Johnson led an effort in the House to support Trump's challenge to the presidential election. Expecting this Unreconstructed Confederate Traitor to ever "do the right thing" when his record is the exact opposite is not only stupid but downright crazy. The guy *likes* being House Squeaker, and letting the Democrats win would end that. We cannot expect ANY Republican to "do the right thing" about anything. Tht's based on their demonstrated record.

" I doubt Speaker Johnson studied constitutional law with a desire to be remembered as the man who broke it for good." He'd revel in that! He does it for his God, don't you know. Madness is a feature of this regime.

Marc Panaye's avatar

My US friends, if the continuation of your Republic depends on what little M. Johnson will be doing you are in even more trouble then I thought.

For little M. Johnson, the self proclaimed "Christian", always does the opposite from what Jesus would do.

When has Mike Johnson ever done the right thing? The only thing that could save the coming elections would be an overwhelming victory for the Democrats, in numbers too big to dispute. Unfortunately, I don’t think that will happen. I think it will get very ugly.

joannegucci's avatar

Don’t forget who MADE this possible: Merrick Garland!

Nancy Stone's avatar

What’s the point in playing the blame game? Nothing can be undone.

joannegucci's avatar

Exactly, but that man should Never forget how he altered history, and the ruined landscape he plowed for the next that came to be. Its maddening & sad, all the suffering!

Carolyn Faselt's avatar

We can't count on Johnson to do the right thing. Trump did tell his minions that they just had to vote one more time and then wouldn't have to vote again. We need to believe him and make a plan.

Denise's avatar

This was exactly what I spent last night thinking about. Johnson is a boot-licking lapdog and White Christian Nationalist. He will NEVER do the right thing. The States’ need to use the National Guard to protect the ballots. I loathe being pessimistic- but I honestly don’t see how we legitimately vote our way out of this nightmare. Who in history has ever peacefully ended a Fascist/authoritarian takeover and voted their way out of it?

You are our government hero, invaluable for your insider insight. But how about a non-government heroic perspective, where we don't play by rules when the other side doesn't play by them? My Substack this week is all about what we-the-people can do, that includes this:

"How about a coup to install a presidential team? Let’s say Heather Cox Richardson, Joyce Vance, Anne Applebaum, and Marianne Williamson. These are women I follow, among other great women who would be equally good to steer us, and maybe there would be more than four for this. Just picture warm, intelligent, and human-loving human beings leading the way. If they stated that they are taking charge, so many millions all over the world would be on the streets in support that they couldn’t be thwarted."
